Welcome to the Ars Electronica Garden Aotearoa

Ars Electronica is the world’s largest media festival, which is held annually in Linz, Austria. Placed at the intersection of art, technology and society, the five-day event attracts over 100,000 international visitors. Founded in 1979 the Ars Electronica Festival was designed to take the emergence of the Digital Revolution as an occasion to explore technologies and interrogate potential futures. The festival consists of symposia, exhibitions, performances, concerts and interventions spanning a broad arc from speculative futuristic scenarios to analytical considerations, from provocative actionism to philosophical debates. Since 2020, the notion of the festival has been extended into an exciting hybrid format. Under the title Keppler’s Gardens, the 2021 festival expands from its central location in Linz to over 100 partner locations around the world, which are interlinked through an extensive network of physical and virtual events.

For the second time, the arc/sec Lab at the University of Auckland (UoA) and the Digital Architecture Research Alliance (DARA) at the Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) are proud to contribute the Ars Electronica Garden AOTEAROA to the global Festival 2021. Our Garden showcases projects from New Zealand’s artists, musicians, scientists and researchers in the form of prototypical installations, performances and talks.

The Garden is designed as a bi-directional portal and welcomes national and international visitors to a cyber-physical environment. Local guests can visit the physical exhibition hosted by the Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation at VUW in Wellington; and international guests can experience the projects in a virtual 3D gallery and through a series of online events. This includes a sonic music night hosted by Meow, one of Wellington’s famous night clubs.

We are looking forward to welcome you in person in Wellington or online using your mobile phone, PC or VR head-set.
